The dashboard battery light glows slightly on my 508D at all times it increases in intensity slightly with higher revs, the fan belt has the correct tension and the alternator is putting out the correct voltage any ideas as to the problem?

Either the carbon brushes or the regulator.
If you have a Bosch workshop in your vicinity, take the alternator there and let them test it. It takes them five minutes. In Eindhoven (NL) they didn't even charge anything for it....
